New Theatres, the oldest film production company of India, is rising slowly like the immortal Phoenix of Greek mythology, suffering a series of setbacks and recovering after prolonged litigations. B.N.Sircar produced his first talkie “Dena Paona” directed by Premankur Atorthy in Bengali, 1931. New Theatres ultimately produced 150 films, starting with the silent film “Chore Kanta” (directed by Charu Roy, 1931) ending with “Bokul” (directed by Bholanath Mitra, 1955). Most of its films were based on classic literature of Bankimchandra, Saratchandra, Rabindranath etc, or on social or humanitarian themes, designed for family viewing and devoid of cheap titillation or crudity. New Theatres is also credited with the discovery and utilization of some of the greatest talents of films in India Such as directors Pramathesh Barua, Debaki Kumar Bose, Nitin Bose, Madhu Bose, Hemchandra Chundar, Phani Mazumdar, Kartik Chatterjee, Bimal Roy and singing stars such as Pankaj Mullick, Kanan Devi, Asit Baran, Pahari Sanyal, the legendary K.L.Saigal, and the blind singer K.C.Dey. The milestones created by New Theatres are unforgettable such as “Chandidas” (1932), “Mukti” (1937), “Vidyapati” (1938), “Adhikar” (1938), “Jiban Maran” (1939), “Rajat Jayanti” (1939) “Daktar” (1940), “ Pratisruti” (1941), “Kashinath” (1943), “Udayer Pathe” (1944), “ Dui Purush” (1945), “Anjangarh” (1948). The vintage films lovers of India, and may be also abroad, are celebrating 75 years of this glorious institution.

Mohan (Saigal), a radio singer, and Kedar (Najam), a doctor, both love Geeta (Desai). Mohan falls ill and makes way for Kedar, who eventually marries Geeta. After wandering in a Derlirium, Mohan is admitted to sanatorium where he is cured of TB. He is then employed in the same institution. In a campaign to set up more sanatoria, Mohan agrees to sing on the radio (the film’s hit song ‘Pankhi aaj kon katha koi’) to raise funds while Kedar persuades Geeta to give a dance recital. Geeta hears Mohan’s broadcast and rushes to him followed by Kedar. To heighten the emotions for the climax of the story, Geeta has a bad accident and is admitted to the very sanatorium where Mohan works......
